Ok, so I've been wanting to get a private cloud going with trusted users, and friends, but since many of you are long time friends, I figured this was a good place to start. People that have been verified by either the community or myself, can join the swarm. OneSwarm client is working great and running all the better every day, it's a power tool for anonymity even in a trusted ring of users. Content that is shared isn't shown by host, just as a collection so even when you share the client doesn't know exactly from where in the swarm the data originally came from, if I'm not mistaken in my understanding. The other day when I was over at QuickBreeze's house, I noticed he was running Linux Mint on his desktop via my recommendation. I knew it was great for a new Linux user having all of the 'bad' stuff, e.g. codecs, etc. pre-installed. Although I must admit, the more I use it, the more I like it, I've spent a few days over there and really gotten to know it. It's basically Ubuntu of course but here are some very nice aesthetic changes which I can say are honestly and upgrade from the usage standpoint. Gnome is modified to have a different look when using the kickstart menu, and Mint also has and awesome default theme cutting that part out from having the user configure a nice sleek looking desktop.

How to run Folding@Home GPU Client on Linux

Using this tutorial, in about 15 minutes you can have your machine doing both Folding@Home on the processor and utilizing your video card as well. Video cards are capable of an extreme amount of computing power when utilized efficiently. Putting this to work on your machine will definitely boost your points! I have done this to QuickBreeze's machine and tested it successfully. It is running more than 3x the speed of the CPU client with a very similar size WU. This is definitely worth doing!

Code: Select all: sudo apt-get updatesudo apt-get dist-upgradesudo reboot

You
will be asked for your password when using the sudo command. Rebooting
will use the latest kernel version you just downloaded and installed.
If you don't reboot, you may download the wrong header files in Step 7.5. Log back in after rebooting, then install WINE:

6. Download the latest 180-series NVIDIA Linux 64-bit driver and the CUDA 2.0 32-bit toolkit:

are backward apostrophes surrounding the uname command, which allows
the output of uname to be incorporated into the filename of the headers
file. Cut and paste from the above line if you have trouble downloading

Follow
the prompts. You can select "No" when asked to download a kernel
interface. Go ahead and install the OpenGL libraries too. Answer "Yes"
when asked if you would like to run the nvidia-xconfig utility.9. Install the NVIDIA 32-bit toolkit:

Use the default path by hitting Enter when prompted.10. Link the toolkit:

11. Create the WINE directory structure:

If you see any of the libraries with "not found" then the linking didn't work. Go back to step 10.14. Create the following script to initialize CUDA without running X:

To exit nano and save the file, hit CTRL-X.15. Make the cudainit file executable.

16. Run the cudainit script as root.

You should now have a few extra devices in /dev; check to make sure:

If you have one video card, you should see the following:

You
will need to rerun this script before starting the client whenever you
reboot your system. You may want to include this in a login/startup
script so it executes automatically whenever you reboot.17. Time to download the console version of the GPU2 folding client (finally!):

18. Ubuntu doesn't come with an unzip program, so we'll install it:

20. Time for the moment of truth: let's start the client!

If
you have more than one video card, you can run a separate instance of
the client using the -gpu flag. Use -gpu 0 for the first card, then
-gpu 1 for the second card, etc. If you have only one card, you don't
need the -gpu flag. Make sure that you assign different Machine IDs
during the configuration if you run more than one client!Since
we're running 64-bit Ubuntu, we can run an SMP client at the same time
if you have a dual or quad core processor. I recommend Ivoshiee's
excellent finstall script. Just enter the following commands:

start, just type "screen" at the prompt, and you will create a new
terminal. Start the folding client, then you can "detach" the screen by
pressing CTRL-A, release, then d. To reconnect, type "screen -r" at the
prompt. Type "man screen" at the prompt for more info if you're not
familiar with it.When you stop folding by hitting CTRL-C, make
sure all of your core files terminate before restarting the client. If
the core doesn't terminate and you restart, the WU will EUE. After
exiting the client, type "top" to see if any processes labeled
"FahCore_11.exe" or "FahCore_14.exe" are still running. Note the PID
number of the process on the left, then quit out of top (hit "q"), then
type "kill" followed by the PID number and hit Enter. Check "top" again
to make sure it's killed.I recommend using Ubuntu 8.04.3
instead of 8.10 or 9.04, especially if you have a quad core system and
want to run an SMP client at the same time. SMP performance on 8.10 is
much slower for quads, and 9.04 isn't much better. Dual core CPUs don't
seem to be affected.Special thanks to all who contributed to the GPU2 Linux/WINE thread, especially shatteredsilicon, actong, and Shelnutt, and to Mindmatter, who created the wiki page. Extra special thanks to ihaque for his input from the Pande Group side of things.

Ok, so now that you can attach files to threads etc, I thought I would start a screen shot thread to let everyone show off their desktop...And to see how lazy Preston is lol, :P. I guess I'll start.

Using Portable Linux inside Ubuntu to install any Linux .iso to USB

In this example, I had a machine with no CD-ROM that I was trying to install Ubuntu on. I had another laptop handy with Ubuntu on it so here we go. I chose the Ubuntu 9.04 i386 cd .ISO image [ to download. to use for installation.

The installation is extremely simple. Just install the portable linux package which is easily installed in Ubuntu.

Once installed and launched you will simply be asked to choose an iso, if you've downloaded the iso just simply choose it from the local location. Once you've done that choose the destination usb drive. For me the software picked up the only usb drive which was actually 3.9GB formatted. I was highly impressed, it showed up as /dev/sda6 or similar in the menu. I simply choose your media installation from the drop box. There is one last option where you are able to choose the amount of space left available for personal storage, this is because if you're doing this with a live-cd which in my case the installation media is live, by default, Portable Linux makes the usb environment persistent so that changes are automatically installed. So applications, themes, fonts, media, etc are saved. Once you've chosen an adequate amount of space to save for use, simply choose install.
My first attempt at this failed, I think this was more to the fault of my Ubuntu installation. Once the process starts, it shows you what is happening. One of the first steps is to format the drive, well once this happens, gnome automatically mounted the new installation and it failed. I just simply reattempted the installation and since it was already formatted it went on with no issues and I have tested the usb stick and it is working great.

Before I started to do this I looked around for a tool to do this with and there are several commonly used apps out there for this. The one thing that I noticed is that many of them still require one step of this or that after or before installation or maybe do not offer as many options as the application that I chose to use. Portable Linux seems to just be over the top for this, it offers great functionality over many other tools for making a bootable usb linux key from a .iso file.

Many of it's features include:

- Remember your customizations: What's more, if your distribution supports persistence, the files and settings you edit on your live Linux distribution are persisted across reboots.
- Install any distribution, on any distribution: Unlike the competition, it runs on any Linux distribution. On top of that, you can install not just Ubuntu, but any distribution that uses Casper as its LiveCD technology. So if you have Fedora and want to create a live removable drive with Debian, no problem, Portable Linux can do it.
- Rescue systems and run other OSes: Since it uses GRUB (the GRand Unified Bootloader), you can:
* easily add memtest86+ and MS-DOS to it (handy for those BIOS updates),
* boot a Linux or Windows machine with a damaged MBR (master boot record), then subsequently repair it,
* boot any operating system installed in any of the disks in your computer; and even
* boot your Linux operating system using the root partition on your hard disk.
-Access all your files saved on the USB drive: Finally, you can access the area used to store your files just fine from within your Linux distribution. In that manner, you can create your live Linux distro, install a couple of codecs and applications on it, put a bunch of MP3s or movies in it, and you've got a complete multimedia center on your pocket!

Ubuntu 10.04 to boot in 10 seconds? ideas about how?

I'd like to see exactly every change made to make this possible, and mostly why this hasn't happened before if the changes aren't that significant. If a normal desktop machine is booting up this fast, imagine a highly configured car-pc, etc. This is really getting somewhere :D.

I've been known for my insane ability to try out new things at an alarming/unhealthy rate. In my first 4-5 years I was a die hard KDE user but then as my machine at the time aged I started to go ultra-lite with fluxbox and blackbox on occassion. Sometime around my sixth year of using FreeBSD I started experimenting with Gnome and liked it. Ever since I've been hooked and use it primarily on my desktop. Overall I'd have to say that for me in the given situations here's my prefered usage:

Main Desktop: GDM/Gnome
Low-Resource Environment: Fluxbox
VNC over SSH: fluxbox :D

So what is your personal preference on the ab0ve three scenarios mentioned?
