OK, I have solved a huge problem that is floating around right now with many users who have UPGRADED from an older version of Ubuntu. Just as I performed the upgrade, I had no audio, and no multimedia audio output either. Even once I fixed the audio, applications like Amarok didn't work! I've got the fix right here tested and working on this very machine.
As I've quickly come to learn, 9.04 uses the PulseAudio suite for sound management. During the upgrade many times this stuff isn't installed/enabled so in a spiffy you can have your sound back. First simply do the following to add the pulseaudio packages:
'apt-get -y install gnome-volume-control-pulse gnome-alsamixer alsa-oss ubuntu-restricted-extras vlc-plugin-pulse libsdl1.2debian-all asoundconf-gtk xmms2-plugin-pulse padevchooser'
Perform the necessary measures to complete the installations; Once you're finished open up System > Administration > Users & Groups - and then make sure than your user account and the root account both are in these groups: pulse-access pulse-rt pulse.
Now to fix Amarok- Open up Synaptic and search for 'phonon-backend-xine' -check to install and then REMOVE 'phonon-backend-gstreamer'.
Now that you've finished that, reboot, login [after which you should have sound!], and go to System > Preferences > Sound, and change all of the fields in the drop down boxes to Pulse Audio except for the bottom field which is most likely already set to it. Once thats don't fire up Amarok and you should have full functionality!
Hope this helps, I haven't found any other articles that cover the full fix of this issue so hopefully this will help some of you guys, I know it works flawlessly for me!
really informative update .I will follow the precautions.

Are you still in using the 9.04 release? This is quite and old post and unless your are performing an UPGRADE, without a fresh install of any later versions of Ubuntu, this obviously won't work for you. Since this is the default package for handling audio. Please advise:
Well, I'm about ready to break something...... I have been going around in circles trying to fix the sound problem on my laptop and yet again I have come up empty. I tried this but it didn't work. This is becoming annoying.
when you say 'simply do the following' you then string a bunch of words and numbers together. where do I enter these? Its amazing how no one on the entire internet can make ubuntu processes clear to a newbie. Actually, its fascinating, and worthy of a social study.
Welcome stonew508Ok, that is a command which goes which needs to be typed into a terminal with root privileges. In Gnome if you go to "Applications --> Accessories ---> Terminal" it will open a terminal for you. You can then type 'sudo su' which will permanently elevate you to root status until you type 'exit' which will then take you back to a normal user. All commands entered as root are performed system wide so this can be dangerous if you just start punching random keys, take your time and be meticulous. Let me know if you need anything else, :D
Hey Bill great to see you are doing well! I left you my phone number on linked-in, I have an opportunity you may be interested in! Give me call, Nathan!
I'll do that tonight, glad to hear from you.
