OpenBSD 4.6 .ISO available for download!Submitted by Bill Haynes on Fri, 10/16/2009 - 09:02 |
Not too long ago the OpenBSD Journalannounced the OpenBSD 4.6 release had arrived via mail for a few of those that had purchased the release. Since the release of OpenBSD 4.2, the installation ISO's have been made available for free at no charge as opposed to before where they were only available via purchasing the official CD set.
OpenBSD is most likely taking their time adding 4.6 to the mirrors since there were reportedly some issues with the creation or distribution of the purchased set [who wants to buy something and have it online before you even get your purchased copy!]. Until now I haven't been able to find the 4.6 install ISO for download on any mirrors. After digging around and some crafty google searching I found an install mirror with 4.6.
Here are the links for downloading the install images for OpenBSD 4.6:
- AMD64 Installation ISO: install46.iso (319) --254MB
- i386 Installation ISO: install46.iso (319) --232MB
If you're half the OpenBSD fan I am you'll be glad to hear this! OpenBSD has made some vast improvements since the release of 4.5, check out whats new or the release notes for a comprehensive view of changes. If you're new to OpenBSD there is no better time to try it out and see what it's all about; PF [The OpenBSD Packet Filter] is absolutely amazing and offers in my opinion, more control over flowing data than any other firewall out there. Look no further for "Getting started with OpenBSD," don't forget the FAQ, offering a huge list of simple and complex articles and how to's. With several hundred changes, you can expect some new and useful features with this release!
Some new features:
- OpenSSH 5.3
- Over 5,800 ports, minor robustness improvements in package tools.
- A new privilege-separated smtpd
- Software RAID
- Gnome 2.24.3
- KDE 3.5.10.
- Xfce 4.6.1.
- MySQL 5.0.83.

A vulnerability has been found in BIND's named server (CVE-2009-0696). An attacker could crash a server with a specially crafted dynamic update message to a zone for which the server is master.
A source code patch exists which remedies this problem.
I'm working on getting a few things written for ModernGeek.com here, so watch the forums for some great new tips on using OpenBSD 4.6
I've actually spent two days pulling an old machine apart and cleaning it out physically and I got everything back together last night. Today I'll be doing the my first install of 4.6, I'm looking forward to it :D, I've spent quite a bit of time making a rough outline of my pf configuration because that is of course my favorite thing about OpenBSD! I'm actually going to use this macihne as my new gateway, sitting directly on the net. I'm going to do a project thread on this machine and post my pf.conf once I get done. It should be interesting in the very least.
I was just pumped that the PF Faq & man page have already been updated for the new features of 4.6 as duly noted here:
..."As with the rest of the FAQ, this set of documents is focused on users of
OpenBSD 4.6.
As PF is always growing and developing, there are changes and
enhancements between the
4.6-release
version and the version in OpenBSD-current as well as differences
between
4.6
and earlier versions.
The reader is advised to see the man pages for the version of OpenBSD
they are currently working with."
You installed it yet?
